A brief encounter with Niklas Frings-Rupp

A brief interview with Niklas Frings Rupp, one of the co-founders of Miami Ad School; he will be speaking at the IAA Global Conference, in Bucharest, during 24-25th October.

Niklas Frings-Rupp used to be an account man. He worked at award-winning agencies, such as DDB London, TBWA Germany, Springer & Jacoby and Jung von Matt and got his hands on superb accounts, like BMW, Mini, Apple, Bosch, Media Markt, GlaxoWelcome, Weihenstephan, Der Spiegel, Unicef.

But in 2003 it was time for a change. It was time to inspire more, to educate, to shape “new born” creatives. That is how Miami Ad School  was born, from the passion and determination of 2 men: Niklas and his partner, Oliver Voss.

The school started in an old hospital in Hamburg with only 12 students. Ever since the school grew rapidly and now has over 90 students with about 30 nationalities.

After the second year the school was already the most awarded school in the world, collecting the top prizes at all major student award shows.

Niklas is one of the people who shape the minds of future creatives and we wanted to know how he sees creativity, in a nutshell:

What does creativity mean for you?
Creativity is everything – that’s the only way we can differentiate.
The biggest gift one can get.

If creativity is an unlimited resource, how do you harvest your team's creativity?
That’s quite complex and always different and very individual, but eventually I feel one can only help and enable and encourage people to open new doors.

Could you share a life story (personal or professional life) on how creativity improved the world? It could very well be a story of how an unconventional, "crazy idea" saved the day, a story on how lateral thinking helped you come up with a better solution.

As I am a speed maniac, I am still thankful to the guy that thought a wheel might be something really cool and practical and went for this idea to solve his problem.
